Etiology

Epidemiology

  • 2-4 times more common in women than men
  • increased incidence after age 50
  • incidence of 30/100,000 in USA
  • most common cause of hypercalcemia in outpatients

* rule out secondary causes of secondary hyperparathyroidism including familial hypocalciuric hypercalcemia, idiopathic hypercalciuria & absorptive hypercalciuria before diagnosing hyperparathyroidism[3]
