chlorpheniramine/phenylephrine (OMNIhist LA)

Indications

• symptomatic relief from allergies
  • allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, atopy
• relief from cold symptoms & cold & flu symptoms
  • aches & pain, headache, sinusitis, nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, cough, sneezing
• insomnia

Contraindications

• glaucoma
• asthma
• pregnancy
• concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy

Caution:

• coronary artery disease
• peripheral vascular disease
• hypertension
• hyperthyroidism
• urinary bladder neck obstruction

Dosage

• adults & children > 12 years: 1 tab PO every 12 hours
• children 6-12 years: 1/2 tab PO every 12 hours
• tablets should not be crushed or chewed

chlorpheniramine maleate 8 mg

phenylephrine HCl 20 mg

methscopolamine nitrate 2.5 mg

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • central nervous system
    • drowsiness, giddiness, faintness, dizziness
  • gastrointestinal
    • increased appetite, weight gain, nausea, diarrhea abdominal pain, xerostomia
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • cardiovascular
    • chest tightness, palpitations, tachycardia, hypotension, hypertension
  • central nervous system: depression, insomnia
  • dermatologic: photosensitivity, rash, angioedema
  • endocrine & metabolic: lassitude, anorexia
  • gastrointestinal
    • vomiting, constipation
  • genitourinary: urinary frequency, dysuria
  • hepatitis
  • neuromuscular: myalgia, paresthesia
  • ocular: diplopia, blurred vision
  • respiratory: bronchospasm, epistaxis
  • hypersensitivity reaction: rash, urticaria, leukopenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia

Drug interactions

• alcohol
• hypnotics/tranquilizers

• drug interaction(s) of acetaminophen in combination with phenylephrine
