Indications
- treatment of major depression*
Contraindications
Caution:
- the sometimes severe & unpredictable interactions of MAO inhibitors with other drugs has favored use of other antidepressants
Adverse effects
Toxicity:
- Manifestations:
- CNS stimulation, fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, hypertension, nausea, vomiting, dilated pupils, nystagmus, papilledema.
- Treatment:
- GI decontamination, activated charcoal, cathartics.
- Dantrolene (2.5 mg/kg PO or IV every 6 for hyperthermia.
- Nitroprusside for hypertension
- Propranolol for tachycardia
- Fluids for hypotension
- Benzodiazepines for seizures
