monoamine oxidase [MAO] inhibitor

Indications

• treatment of major depression*

Contraindications

Caution:

• the sometimes severe & unpredictable interactions of MAO inhibitors with other drugs has favored use of other antidepressants

Adverse effects

Toxicity:

• Manifestations:
  • CNS stimulation, fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, hypertension, nausea, vomiting, dilated pupils, nystagmus, papilledema.
• Treatment:
  • GI decontamination, activated charcoal, cathartics.
  • Dantrolene (2.5 mg/kg PO or IV every 6 for hyperthermia.
  • Nitroprusside for hypertension
  • Propranolol for tachycardia
  • Fluids for hypotension
  • Benzodiazepines for seizures
