Introduction
Edema of the optic disc.
Etiology
- increased intracranial pressure
- brain tumor
- obstructive hydrocephalus
- cerebral venous thrombosis
- pseudotumor cerebri
- hypertensive emergency (less common)[2]
Clinical manifestations
- visual acuity generally unaffected
- pupillary reflexes normal
- headache & transient vision loss associated with increased intracranial pressure
Diagnostic procedures
- ophthalmoscopy
- lipid (appears yellow) leaks out into the macula
- elevated optic disc & indistinct disc margins[2]
