• involuntary, sudden, audible expulsion of air through the mouth & nose

Complications

• can eject droplets of fluid containng potentially infectious organisms
• largest droplets rapidly settle within 1-2 meters
• smaller & evaporating droplets remain suspended for seconds to a few minutes & travel 6-8 meters
