Function
- roles in angiogenesis, wound healing, & embryonic development
- secretion by endothelial cells may require cell injury
- heparin-binding proteins
- affinity between fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) & their receptors is increased by heparan sulfate glycosaminoglycans that function as coreceptors
- members FGF1 - FGF10 all bind FGF receptors
- members FGF11-23 may not bind FGF receptors
Structure
- precursors to acidic & basic FGF do not contain ER signal sequences
