Introduction

Cytokines are secreted peptides/proteins functioning as intercellular messengers. Cytokines may be distinguished from classical hormones in several ways. The are normally made by more than one cell, have a wide range of overlapping biological activities, & generally act over a short range. Most mammalian cells seem to be able to produce a range of cytokines & to respond to various cytokines through surface receptors.
