- medical non-compliance is a common cause of diabetes mellitus complication
Epidemiology
Complications
- hyperglycemic hyperosmolar coma more common than diabetic ketoacidosis[1]
- increased risk for cardiovascular disease
- microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus
- cancer may exceed cardiovascular disease as a leading cause of death in adults with type 2 diabetes[11]
- mortality from colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer, & endometrial cancer may contribute[11]
- increased mortality
- acanthosis nigricans
- gastroparesis
- increases risk of small intestine bacterial overgrowth
- increased risk of geriatric syndromes[2][3][4]
- polypharmacy
- urinary incontinence
- falls in the elderly
- cognitive impairment (MCI, dementia)[2][9]
- diabetes mellitus type 2 for >10 years doubles risk of dementia at age 70[10]
- depression
- chronic pain
- functional impairment
- disablity[2]
