screening test of choice for pheochromocytoma

Reference interval

total < 900 ug/24 hours
metanephrine 40-300 ug/24 hours
normetanephrine 60-600 ug/24 hours

Increases

catecholamine-secreting neurochromaffin tumors
- pheochromocytoma
- paraganglioma
- neuroblastome
pharmaceutical agents:
- in vivo effects
  - nitroglycerin, phenothiazines
- chemical interferences
  - vitamin B (high doses), erythromycin, hydralazine, levodopa, methenamine hippurate, methenamine mandelate, methyldopa, nicotinic acid, quinine, quinidine, salicylate, tetracyclines
- false positives for pheochromcytoma with^[5]

Decreases

pharmaceutical agents:
- in vivo effects
  - MAO inhibitors
