Epidemiology
- bacterial infections are the 2nd leading cause of death world-wide after coronary artery disease[3]
- Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, & Pseudomonas aeruginosa account for 55% of death due to bacterial infection[3]
Management
- in general, obtain appropriate cultures prior to starting antibiotics
- early antibiotics are associated with lower mortality in patients with severe bacterial infections[2]
