Function

• maintenance of transcriptionally repressive state of genes, including Hox genes, throughout development
• acts via chromatin remodeling & modification of histones, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility
• mediates monoubiquitination of histone H2A Lys-119, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility
• RNF2 acts as the main E3 ubiquitin ligase on histone H2A
• RING1 & PCGF4 act as modulators of RNF2 activity
