Function
- form multiprotein complexes (see Polycomb group multiprotein PRC1 complex)
- transcriptional repression of genes via modification of chromatin, rendering it heritably changed in expressibility
- maintain transcriptionally repressive state of homeotic genes throughout development
- NOT required to initiate repression, but to maintain it during later stages of development
- methylation of histones, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility (putative)
