polycomb group protein (PcG)

Function

• form multiprotein complexes (see Polycomb group multiprotein PRC1 complex)
• transcriptional repression of genes via modification of chromatin, rendering it heritably changed in expressibility
• maintain transcriptionally repressive state of homeotic genes throughout development
• NOT required to initiate repression, but to maintain it during later stages of development
• methylation of histones, rendering chromatin heritably changed in its expressibility (putative)
