Function
- control of autoimmunity
- generate & mobilize neutrophils
- connect adaptive immunity with innate immunity
- early defense against sepsis & necrosis following trauma
- protection against bacterial infections
- Mycobacteria, Borellia, & Candida all stimulate IL-17 expression
Expression
Pathology
- role in autoimmune diseases
- mice lacking Th17 T cells do not produce IL-17 & are protected from autoimmune diseases
- arthritis that develops after infection with Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) can be blocked by inhibition of IL-17
