Function
- role in docking of synaptic vesicles at presynaptic active zones
- may play a critical role in neurotransmitter exocytosis
- part of the SNARE core complex containing SNAP25, VAMP2 & STX1A
- binds SYTL4 & STXBP6
- found in a ternary complex with STX1A & SNAP25 (putative)
- found in a complex with VAMP8 & SNAP23
- interacts with VAPA & SYBU
- may associate with N-type Ca+2 channel & synaptotagmin
Structure
- belongs to the syntaxin family
- contains 1 t-SNARE coiled-coil homology domain
Compartment
- cell membrane
- isoform 2: secreted (probable)
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- isoform 1 is highly expressed in embryonic spinal cord & ganglia & in adult cerebellum & cerebral cortex
- isoform 2 is expressed in heart, liver, fat, skeletal muscle, kidney & brain
Pathology
- haploinsufficiency of STX1A may be the cause of certain cardiovascular & musculo-skeletal abnormalities observed in Williams-Beuren syndrome
