SNARE [soluble NSF attachment receptor] protein (SNARE, SNAP receptor)

Function

• mediate fusion of cellular transport vesicles with a target compartment
  • lysosome
  • docking of synaptic vesicles with presynaptic membrane
• metastable 'trans' complexes are formed from 3 SNAREs:
  • syntaxin 1 (plasma membrane)
  • SNAP-25 (plasma membrane)
  • synaptobrevin (vesicular)

Compartment

• plasma membrane, vesicles
• vesicular, v-SNAREs, found in transport vesicles during budding
• target, t-SNAREs, found membranes of target compartments

Pathology

• SNAREs are targets of the bacterial neurotoxins responsible for botulism & tetanus
