Function
- mediate fusion of cellular transport vesicles with a target compartment
- lysosome
- docking of synaptic vesicles with presynaptic membrane
- metastable 'trans' complexes are formed from 3 SNAREs:
Compartment
- plasma membrane, vesicles
- vesicular, v-SNAREs, found in transport vesicles during budding
- target, t-SNAREs, found membranes of target compartments
Pathology
- SNAREs are targets of the bacterial neurotoxins responsible for botulism & tetanus
