Structure
- in humans there are 3 generalized types of cortex:
- allocortex (primitive cortex, 1-3 layers)
- mesocortex (transition zone)
- isocortex (6 more or less distinct neuronal layers) [see isocortex (neocortex)]
- the cerbral cortec is divided into 4 main lobes

Cortical surface area: 2600 cm2 (1830-3560 cm2)
Cortical thickness: 1.4-4.0 mm; 2.87 mm (average)
Neurons: 27.4 billion
Synapses: 3900/neuron (average); 4.4 x 10E8/mm3
Notes
- based on cytoarchitecture the cerbral cortex is divided into 52 separate regions known as Brodmann's areas
