Introduction

Largest of the human solute carrier protein families. Comprises at least 20 members. Originally referred to as neurotransmitter transporter family because it first members encode transporters for the neurotransmitters GABA, noradrenaline, serotonin & dopamine. Orphan members of the family appear to encode transporters for amino acids.[2] SLC6 transporters are ion-coupled (symporters).
