Introduction
Tradename: Bumex.
Indications
- management of edema secondary to:
- treatment of hypertension
- treatment of hypercalcemia
- investigational prevention & treatment of apoE4-related Alzheimer's disease[3]
Dosage
Tabs: 0.5, 1, 2 mg.
1 mg of bumetanide is roughly equipotent to 40 mg of furosemide.
Pharmacokinetics
- onset of action:
- within 30-60 minutes after oral administration
- within a few minutes after IV administration
- duration of action
- 4 hours with usual doses
- 6 hours with higher doses
elimination via kidney
Adverse effects
- common (> 10%)
- less common (1-10%)
- uncommon (< 1%)
- hypotension, rash, pruritus, hyperuricemia, cramps, nausea/vomiting, elevated liver function tests, ototoxicity, increased serum creatinine
- other
- hypocalcemia
- vasculitis
- reaction to sulfa-drugs
- drug adverse effects of loop diuretics
- drug adverse effects of sulfonamides
- drug adverse effects of diuretics
- drug adverse effects of antihypertensive agents
Drug interactions
- decreased lithium clearance
- additive effect with other antihypertensive medications
- NSAIDs may decrease effect of bumetanide
- drug interaction(s) anticonvulsants with anti-bacterial agents
- drug interaction(s) SGLT2 inhibitors (flozins) with diuretics
- drug interaction(s) of diuretics in combination with Zn+2
- drug interaction(s) of antiarrhythmic agents in combination with diuretics
- drug interaction(s) of beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonists with loop diuretics
- drug interaction(s) of calcium channel blockers with diuretics
- drug interaction(s) of antibiotics with warfarin
- drug interaction(s) of lithium carbonate with loopt diuretics
- drug interaction(s) of beta-adrenergic receptor antagonists with loop diuretics
