• secretion inhibited by somatostatin, dietary carbohydrate, glucocorticoids
• feedback inhibition by IGF1 & somatotropin
• secretion stimulated by GHRH, ghrelin, arginine, sleep, exercise, hypoglycemia, estradiol
• secretion is pulsatile, 10-30 minute pulses (5-35 ng/mL)
• amplitude & frequency of peaks greatest during prepubertal growth spurt
• healthy adolescent & children average 8 peaks/day; health adults average 5 peaks/day
• largest & most predictable peak occurs 1 hour after onset of sleep
• basal levels (< 3 ng/mL) & frequency & amplitude of pulses declines throughout adult life

Pathology

• may promote growth of cancers: colon cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer
