Function
- transcription regulator
- erythroid & megakaryocytic cell differentiation
- forms heterodimer with transcription factors of the GATA family GATA1, GATA2 & GATA3
- heterodimer can both activate or repress transcriptional activity, depending on the cell & promoter context
- heterodimers activate expression of gene NFE2, ITGA2B, alpha-globin, beta-globin
- heterodimer represses expression of KLF1
- regulation of some genes in gonads 8 cardiac development in associateion with ZFPM2/FOG2
- interacts with corepressor CTBP2
- interaction NOT essential for corepressor activity
- interacts with the N-terminal zinc-finger of GATA1, GATA2 & GATA3
- the CCHC-type zinc fingers 1, 5, 6 & 9 directly bind to GATA-type zinc fingers
- Tyr adjacent to the last Cys of CCHC-type zinc finger is essential for the interaction with GATA-type zinc fingers
Structure
- belongs to the FOG (Friend of GATA) family
- contains 4 C2H2-type zinc fingers
- contains 5 C2HC-type zinc fingers
Compartment
Expression
- expressed in hematopoietic tissues
- also expressed in adult cerebellum, stomach, lymph node, liver, pancreas
- -expressed in fetal heart, liver, spleen
