Introduction

50 ug mestranol (estrogen) plus 1 mg norethindrone (progestin)

Indications

• prevention of pregnancy
• treatment of hypermenorrhea
• endometriosis
• female hypogonadism

Adverse effects

• common (> 10%)
  • nausea, peripheral edema, enlargement of breasts, breast tenderness, anorexia, bloating
• less common (1-10%)
  • vomiting, diarrhea, increased libido, headache
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • intolerance to contact lenses, breast tumors, amenorrhea, alterations in frequency & flow of menses, hypertension, thromboembolism, stroke, myocardial infarction, edema, depression, dizziness, anxiety, chloasma, melasma, rash, impaired glucose tolerance, GI distress, increased triglycerides & LDL, cholestatic jaundice, increased susceptibility to Candida infection
