Function
- induces apoptosis
- isoform BimL is more potent than isoform BimEL
- isoform Bim-alpha1, isoform Bim-alpha2 & isoform Bim-alpha3 induce apoptosis, although less potent than the isoforms BimEL, BimL & BimS
- isoform Bim-gamma induces apoptosis
- heterodimerizes with antiapoptotic bcl-2 family protein members: MCL-1, BCL-2, BCL-XL, BFL-1, & BHRF-1; does not heterodimerize with proapoptotic members BAD, BOK, BAX or BAK (putative)
- required for apoptosis of autoreactive thymocytes[2]
Structure
- one of the 'BH3 domain only' members of the bcl-2 family of proteins
- the BH3 motif is required for Bcl-2 binding & cytotoxicity
Compartment
- intracytoplasmic membrane; peripheral membrane protein (putative
- associated with intracytoplasmic membranes (putative)
- isoform BimEL: mitochondrion
- isoform BimL: mitochondrion
- isoform BimS: mitochondrion
- isoform Bim-alpha1: mitochondrion
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=17; BimEL, BimL, BimS, Bim-alpha, Bim-beta, Bim-gamma forms
Expression
- isoform BimEL, isoform BimL & isoform BimS are the predominant isoforms & are ubiquitously expressed with a tissue-specific variation
- isoform Bim-gamma is most abundantly expressed in small intestine & colon, & in lower levels in spleen, prostate, testis, heart, liver & kidney
