Bcl-2 associated protein X (BAX)
Jump to navigation
Jump to search
Function
- inhibits bcl-2 through formation of heterodimers
- binding of bcl-2 to Bax occurs via BH1 domain & BH2 domain
- Bax also forms homodimers
- oligomerization of bax leads to integration in the mitochondrial outer membrane & channel formation
- component of permeability transition pore complex (PTPC)
- cooperates with constitutive mitochondrial protein adenosine nucleotide translocator-1 (ANT-1) to increase mitochondrial membrane permeability & trigger cell death
- induces release of cytochrome c from mitochondria
Compartment
- translocates from cytosol to mitochondria during apoptosis
