Function
- transcriptional coactivator for steroid receptors & nuclear receptors
- greatly increases transcriptional activity of PPARG & thyroid hormone receptor on the uncoupling protein promoter
- can regulate key mitochondrial genes that contribute to the program of adaptive thermogenesis (putative)
- binds MYBBP1A, which inhibits it transcriptional activation
- interacts with PRDM16
- interacts with LRPPRC
- homooligomer
- interacts with LPIN1 (putative)
- induction of PPARGC1A expression by exercise results in
- secretion of irisin[2]
- white fat converting to brown fat
- increased insulin receptor sensitivity[2]
Structure
- contains 1 RRM domain (RNA recognition motif)
Compartment
Expression
- heart, skeletal muscle, liver & kidney
- expressed at lower levels in brain & pancreas & at very low levels in the intestine & white adipose tissue
- in skeletal muscle, levels were lower in obese than in lean subjects
- fasting induces a 2-fold increase in skeletal muscle expression in obese subjects
- exercise induces skeletal muscle to produce PPARGC1A
