Function
- heterodimer of SAE1 & UBA2/SAE2 acts as a E1 ligase for SUMO1, SUMO2, SUMO3, & probably SUMO4
- enzyme regulatory subunit
- mediates ATP-dependent activation of SUMO proteins followed by formation of a thioester bond between a SUMO protein & a conserved active site Cys on UBA2/SAE2
- protein modification; protein sumoylation
- phosphorylated upon DNA damage, probably by ATM or ATR
- heterodimer of SAE1 & UBA2/SAE2 corresponds to the two domains that are encoded on a single polypeptide chain in ubiquitin-activating enzyme E1
- interacts with UBE2I
Structure
belongs to the ubiquitin-activating E1 family
