Function
- chemotactic for interleukin-activated T-cells
- not chemotactic for unstimulated T-cells, neutrophils or monocytes
- induces Ca+2 release in activated T-cells
- binds to CXCR3
- may play a role in CNS diseases which involve T-cell recruitment
- may play a role in skin immune responses
Structure
- belongs to the intercrine alpha (chemokine CxC) family
Compartment
Expression
- high levels in peripheral blood leukocytes, pancreas & liver astrocytes
- moderate levels in thymus, spleen & lung
- low levels in placenta, prostate & small intestine
- also found in epidermal basal layer keratinocytes in skin disorders
- induced by IFN-gamma & IFNB1/IFN-beta
- induction by IFN-gamma is enhanced by
- TNF in monocytes, dermal fibroblasts & endothelial cells
- IL-1 in astrocytes
