Function
- sequence-specific DNA-binding transcription factor
- represses transcription at least in part by recruitment of histone methyltransferase EHMT2/G9A & histone deacetylases such as HDAC1
- regulates hematopoiesis-associated protein-coding & microRNA (miRNA) genes
- may regulate the expression of proteins involved in extracellular matrix development & maintenance, including fibrillar collagens, such as COL4A1 & COL11A1, connective tissue components, such as HAPLN1, & molecules regulating cell migration & adhesion, including EDIL3 & TGFB2
- may cause G2/M arrest & apoptosis in cancer cells
- interacts with EHMT2/G9A, GFI1 & HDAC1
Structure
- contains 16 C2H2-type Zn+2 fingers
- contains 1 SET domain
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=3
Expression
- widely expressed
- highest levels in colon & ovary
- tends to be silenced in breast, colorectal, gastric & liver cancer tissues
Pathology
- defects in PRDM5 are the cause of brittle cornea syndrome type 2
