Function
- may function as a paracrine antifibrotic factor in the heart
- role in cardiovascular homeostasis through natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation, & inhibition of renin & aldosterone secretion
- specifically binds & stimulates the cGMP production of the NPR1 receptor.
- binds the clearance receptor NPR3
- mediates itch response in dorsal root ganglion cells expressing TRPV1[4]
- modulates ghrelin, hunger, & satiety in brain[6]
Structure
- belongs to the natriuretic peptide family
Compartment
Expression
- brain
- dorsal root ganglia
- atria, but at much lower levels than ANP
Pharmacology
- available under the name Nesiritide (scios), used for the treatment of heart failure
