Function
- endogenous anti-hypertensive agent secreted from the cardiac atria
- derived from a larger precursor protein (NPPA)
Mechanism of action
- enhances salt & water excretion
- blocks aldosterone & renin secretion
- inhibits the action of angiotensin II & vasopressin
- inhibits smooth muscle contraction
- net effect is a decrease in blood pressure & blood volume
