- inhibits factor X (factor Xa) directly
- inhibits factor VIIa/tissue factor activity (factor Xa- dependent), presumably by forming a quaternary factor Xa/LACI/factor VIIa/TF complex
- has antithrombotic action
- can associate with lipoproteins in plasma
