Function
- induces cartilage & bone formation.
- also acts in mesoderm induction, tooth development, limb formation & fracture repair
- acts in concert with PTHLH/PTHRP to stimulate ductal outgrowth during embryonic mammary development & to inhibit hair follicle induction (putative)
- interacts with GREM2 (putative) & SOSTDC1
- part of a complex consisting of TWSG1 & CHRD (putative)

- homodimer; disulfide-linked (putative)
- belongs to the TGF-beta family
Compartment
Expression
- expressed in the lung
- lower expression in kidney
- present also in normal & neoplastic prostate tissues, & prostate cancer cell lines
Pathology
- defects in BMP4 are the cause of
- microphthalmia syndromic type 6
- non-syndromic orofacial cleft type 11
