Physiology

• osteoblasts within bone form crosslinked collagen & in much smaller quantities, osteocalcin & osteopontin, which compose the organic matrix of bone
• osteocytes make sclerostin
  • sclerostin generally inhibits bone formation
  • when osteocytes sense bone-loading activities, sclerostin secretion diminishes, allowing for increased bone formation
• osteoclasts are involved in bone resorption
