Introduction
The formation of bone.
Physiology
- osteoblasts within bone form crosslinked collagen & in much smaller quantities, osteocalcin & osteopontin, which compose the organic matrix of bone
- osteocytes make sclerostin[2]
- sclerostin generally inhibits bone formation
- when osteocytes sense bone-loading activities, sclerostin secretion diminishes, allowing for increased bone formation[2]
- osteoclasts are involved in bone resorption
