Function
- stimulates activity of transcription factors & nuclear receptors
- activates transcritional activity of: estrogen receptor alpha nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1) glucocorticoid receptor in the presence of glucocorticoids
- role in constitutive non-adrenergic-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis
- role in fat oxidation & non-oxidative glucose metabolism & in regulation of energy expenditure (putative)
- interacts with HNF4A, SREBF1, PPARA, THRB, HCFC1, ESRRA, ESR1
Structure
- contains 2 LXXLL motifs, required for association with nuclear receptors contains 1 RRM domain (RNA recognition motif)
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=5
Expression
- ubiquitous
- higher expression in heart, brain, skeletal muscle
- repressed by saturated fatty acids, i.e. palmitate, stearate in skeletal muscle cells
- induced by insulin
Pathology
- expression diminished by aging in skeletal muscle biopsies
- down-regulated in type 2 diabetes mellitus subjects & pre-diabetics
