Diminished secretion of aldosterone.

Etiology

• Addison's disease
• pharmacologic agents
  • non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • heparin
  • ACE inhibitors
• genetic diseases

Laboratory

• plasma aldosterone low
• plasma 18-hydroxycorticosterone* (low, normal or high)
• serum sodium (hyponatremia)
• serum potassium (hyperkalemia)

* immediate precursor of aldosterone
