carbinoxamine/pseudoephedrine (Carbiset, Rondec)

Introduction

Tradenames: Carbiset, Rondec.

Indications

• seasonal allergic rhinitis
• urticaria

Contraindications

• narrow-angle glaucoma
• bladder neck obstruction
• symptomatic prostatic hypertrophy
• stenosing peptic ulcer
• concurrent MAO inhibitor therapy

Caution: patients with hypertension

Dosage

• adults: 1 tablet or 5 mL syrup QID
• children:
  • 18 months-6 years: 2.5 mL syrup TID-QID
  • > 6 years: 5 mL syrup BID-QID

Tablets: carbinoxamine maleate 4 mg + pseudoephedrine HCl 60 mL

Syrup: carbinoxamine maleate 4 mg + pseudoephedrine HCl 60 mL/5mL (240 mL)

Adverse effects

• common (> 10%)
  • drowsiness
  • thickening of bronchial secretions
• less common (1-10%)
  • headache, fatigue, increased appetite, weight gain, nervousness, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, dry mouth, pharyngitis, arthralgia
• uncommon (< 1%)
  • angioedema, bronchospasm, depression, edema, epistaxis, hepatitis, myalgia, palpitations, paresthesias, photosensitivity, rash
