Neomycin/Polymixin B (Neosporin GU irrigant)

Indications

• short term use as a continuous irrigant or rinse in the urinary bladder to prevent bacteriuria & gram-negative septicemia associated with use of indwelling catheters
• topical bacterial infections due to susceptible organisms
  • skin infection
  • otitis externa
• eye infections
  • keratitis
  • uveitis
  • blepharoconjunctivitis
  • corneal abrasion

Pregnancy category: D

Dosage

• children & adults: bladder irrigation continuous irrigant or rinse in the urinary bladder 1 mL is added to 1 liter of normal saline with rate of administration adjusted to urine output generally no more than 1 liter of irrigant used per day Irrigant solution: neomycin sulfate 40 mg & polymixin B sulfate 200,000 units/mL (1 mL)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • contact dermatitis, erythema, rash, urticaria, burning, neuromuscular blockade, ototoxicity, nephrotoxicity, bladder irritation
