oxymetholone (Anadrol-50)

Introduction

DEA class 3.

Indications

• treatment of anemias caused by deficient erythropoiesis
  • acquired aplastic anemia
  • congenital aplastic anemia
  • myelofibrosis
  • hypoplastic anemias due to the administration of myelotoxic drugs

Dosage

• 1-5 mg/kg

Tablet: 50 mg

Adverse effects

• Hepatic:
  • cholestatic jaundice
  • hepatocellular neoplasms
  • peliosis hepatis
• Genitourinary:
  • testicular atrophy, oligospermia, impotence, chronic priapism, epididymitis, bladder irritability (men)
  • clitoral enlargement, menstrual irregularities (women)
• CNS: excitation, insomnia.
• GI: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
• Hematologic:
  • bleeding in patients on anticoagulant therapy
  • iron-deficiency
  • leukemia has been reported
• Gynecomastia
• Deepening of the voice in women.
• Hirsutism and male-pattern baldness in women, male-pattern of hair loss in postpubertal males
• Acne (especially in women & prepubertal boys)
• Premature closure of epiphyses in children
• Muscle cramps
• Edema
• Decreased glucose tolerance
• Unfavorable lipid profiles
  • increased serum LDL cholesterol
  • decreased serum HDL cholesterol

• drug adverse effects of androgens
