Introduction
Surgical removal of fallopian tubes & ovaries, generally in association with total abdominal hysterectomy.
Indications
- bilateral
- prophylactic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO), with or without hysterectomy, after completion of childbearing is the standard of care for female carriers of BRCA1 mutation or BRCA2 mutation[1]
Complications
- bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy before menopause may lead to medial temporal lobe neurodegeneration & early dementia[4]
Management
- in premenopausal women, hormone replacement therapy may mitigate menopausal symptoms & excess risk for osteoporosis[3]
