Indications

Contraindications

Dosage

  • adults & children > 12 years of age
    • 5-20 mL PO every 4 hours
    • 600-1200 mg PO every 12 hours
    • maximum 2400 mg QD
  • children 6-12 years of age
    • 5-10 mL/dose
    • 600 mg PO every 12 hours
    • maximum 1200 mg QD
  • children 2-6 years of age
  • increase fluid intake to help loosen mucus Tabs (sustained-release): 600 mg Mucinex (OTC)

Syrup: 100 mg/5 mL.

Adverse effects

Mechanism of action

  • expectorant action through increased output of respiratory fluid, enhancing flow of less viscid secretion
  • evidence is subjective & not well established
