guaifenesin/pseudoephedrine (Entex PSE, Robitussin PE)

Introduction

pseudoephedrine 120 mg, guaifenesin 600 mg

Indications

• symptomatic relief of respiratory conditions with tenacious mucus plugs & congestion
  • sinusitis
  • pharyngitis
  • bronchitis
  • asthma
• treatment of cold symptoms
  • rhinitis, rhinorrhea, cough
• adjunctive therapy in serous otitis media

Contraindications

• severe hypertension
• concurrent administration MAO inhibitor

Dosage

• 10 mL every 4 hours (Robitussin PE)
• 5 mL/dose if 6-12 yo. 2.5 mL/dose if 2-5 yo.
• 1 tab PO BID (Entex PSE)

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • sympathomimetic effects (see pseudoephedrine)
