guaifenesin/phenylpropanolamine (Entex LA, Ami-Tex LA)

Indications

• symptomatic relief of respiratory conditions with tenacious mucus plugs & congestion
  • sinusitis
  • pharyngitis
  • bronchitis
  • asthma
• adjunctive therapy in serous otitis media

Contraindications

• severe hypertension
• concurrent administration MAO inhibitor

Dosage

• 1 tab or 10 mL PO every 6 hours.
• Entex LA: 1 tab PO every 12 hours. Entex LA (sustained release):
  • guaifenesin 400 mg & phenylpropanolamine HCl 75 mg

Adverse effects

• not common (1-10%)
  • sympathomimetic effects (see phenylpropanolamine)
