Introduction

Phenotype includes:

histologic features typical of asthma
marked bronchoconstriction in response to inhaled methacholine
increased numbers of eosinophils
increased Th2/Th1 helper cell ratio
unusually thick layers of collagen & more myofibroblasts in bronchial airways
increased levels of cytokines characteristic of asthmatic airways
- interferon-gamma
- interleukins IL-4, IL-5, IL-13
