Function
- synergy with G-CSF & erythropoietin
- in conjunction with IL-13, stimulates responding B-cells to switch to IgE production
- role in at least several B-cell activation processes as well as of other cell types
- costimulator of DNA-synthesis
- induces expression of class II MHC molecules on resting B-cells
- enhances both secretion & cell surface expression of IgE & IgG1
- regulates expression of the low affinity Fc receptor for IgE (CD23) on both lymphocytes & monocytes
Structure
belongs to the IL-4/IL-13 family
Compartment
Alternative splicing
named isoforms=2
Pathology
- polymorphisms in IL4 may be a cause of susceptibility to ischemic stroke
