Etiology
- hyperthyroidism
- proximal, limb-girdle weakness
- bulbar paralysis
- ophthalmoplegia (sparing pupillary & ciliary muscles)
- thyrotoxic periodic paralysis in Orientals
- hypothyroidism
- does not produce significant muscle weakness
- may cause muscle fatigue, aching & cramps
- serum creatine kinase is markedly elevated
- responds to thyroid hormone replacement with rapid & complete resolution of symptoms in most patients
- primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism
- muscle weakness
- muscle weakness
- segmental muscle fiber necrosis
- proximal muscle weakness
- non-specific bone pain
- fatigue
