Introduction
Tradename: Bicitra (also available as citric acid alkaline syrup)
Indications
- treatment of metabolic acidosis, especially caused by renal tubular acidosis
- long-term maintenance of alkaline urine
Dosage
- dilute in water
- adults 15-30 mL with water after meals & QHS
- children: 2-3 meq/kg//day divided TID-QID or 5-15 mL after meals & QHS
Solution: (oral)
- sodium citrate 500 mg & citric acid 334 mg/5 mL (473 mL)

Adverse effects
- not common (1-10%)
- other
- calcium citrate urolithiasis
- exacerbation of CHF
- edema
- calcium citrate may increase gastrointestinal Al+3 absorption
Drug interactions
- increased excretion of chlorpropamide, lithium, methotrexate, salicylates, tetracyclines
- decreased excretion of anorexiants, quinidine, sympathomimetics
