Etiology
- protein-bound amylase
- inborn macroamylasemia: attachment to albumin or globulin
- IgA-bound:
- IgG-bound:
- immune complex-bound:
Epidemiology
- 2% of normal persons
Pathology
- pancreatic amylase & salivary amylase present in variable proprotions
Laboratory
- the amylase-protein complex may intermittently dissociate resulting in fluctuating serum amylase levels from normal to grossly elevated
- urine amylase is normal
