Etiology
- viral hepatitis
- pharmaceutical agents
- alcoholic hepatitis
- congestive heart failure
- chronic pancreatitis
- Hodgkin's disease
- fatty liver
Clinical manifestations
Laboratory
- serum direct bilirubin is elevated
- serum bile acids elevated 10-20 fold
- serum alkaline phosphatase is elevated
- serum gamma-glutamyltransferase is elevated
- serum 5'nucleotidase is elevated
- serum ALT is moderately elevated
- serum cholesterol is elevated
Diagnostic procedures
Management
- treat underlying etiology
- nutrition
- low fat, low cholesterol diet
- vitamin supplementation (especially fat-souble vitamins)
- cholestyramine may help reduce itch (see cholestatis)
