Indications
- assessment of HIV1 infection
- screening for HIV1*
* follow-up of negative HIV1 serology with HIV1 p24 antigen & HIV1 RNA improves detaction rates in high-risk populations[2]
Specimen
- whole blood (ACD or EDTA)
- store at 4 degrees C
Procedure
- branched DNA (bDNA) assay
- Reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)
- lower limit of detection 20-50 copies/mL
Notes
- PCR primers are directed towards env, gag & pol regions of the HIV genome
- it is possible to monitor infection during the latent period
