estrone (E1)

Introduction

The major estrogen after menopause. Produces by adrenal & in adipose tissue. Metabolite of 17-beta estradiol. It is a less potent estrogen than estradiol.

Adverse effects

• increased levels of:
  • renin substrate
  • sex hormone-binding globulin
  • thyroxine-binding globulin
  • cortisol-binding globulin
• hypertension
• gallbladder disease
• thrombosis
• hepatotoxicity

• drug adverse effects of estrogens
