Introduction
Tradenames: Alupent, Metaprel, Dey-Dose.
Indications
- relief/prevention of bronchospasm in patients with
Dosage
- 0.1 mL/kg up to 0.3 mL 5% solution nebulized every 4 hours
- inhaler: 2-3 puffs every 3-4 hours
- oral: 20 mg PO TID/QID
- children
Aerosol: 0.65 mg/metered dose Solution for inhalation: 5% (10 mL) Solution ready for inhalation: 0.4% (2.5 mL), 0.6 mL (2.5 mL)
Tabs: 10 & 20 mg
Syrup: 10 mg/5 mL (240 mL, 473 mL)
Pharmacokinetics
- onset of action:
- after inhalation is 1 minute
- after nebulizer 5-30 minutes
- peak effect: within 1 hour
- duration of action:
elimination via liver
Adverse effects
- common (> 10%)
- less common (1-10%)
- bad taste, weakness, nausea/vomiting, trembling, muscle cramps, hypertension, increased sweating, headache, tachycardia, dizziness, coughing
- uncommon (< 1%)
- other
- dose-related reflex tachycardia, tremor & palpitation
- decreased serum K+ concentration
- drug adverse effects of adrenergic receptor agonists
- drug adverse effects of beta-adrenergic receptor agonists
- drug adverse effects of sympathomimetic(s)
Drug interactions
- beta blockers may antagonize effects
